What is the Selvedge of a Fabric?

Define Selvage Selvage (self-edge) is the narrow lengthwise edge of a fabric. It is usually between ¼ and ½ inches wide and on both edges. The major purpose of having selvages is to prevent the fabric from unraveling/fraying. How to Find the Selvage? Selvages are usually visible by either heaving a slightly different weave, texture, or color.  Sometimes a selvage may have tiny (smooth or bumpy) holes. They are from the hooks ( see the explanation of tenterhook here ) used on fabric looms to hold the fabric tight.  Sometimes a selvage may have text marks that show the name of the fabric, the designer, the manufacturer, and a series of colored circles.
